Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
